Private Peppers
At Private Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club, we ensure no Marine faces Family Day alone. Through connection, compassion, and community, we remind every new Marine that once they earn the title, they’ll always have a family, both in and out of uniform.
Our Story
In 2016, Marine veteran and spouse Pete Lindenthal set out to find a way to support new Marines during Family Day. His focus was on those whose families were unable to attend, ensuring they still felt the pride, connection, and belonging that come with joining the Marine Corps family.
From that vision, Private Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club was born, a volunteer-driven effort to welcome new Marines, offer them encouragement, and provide a way to call home. Volunteers greeted each Marine with a smile, a prepaid phone to connect with loved ones, a snack and drink, and words of support to remind them they were not alone.
Nearly a decade later, Mr. Lindenthal’s mission continues to thrive. Each Family Day, dedicated volunteers gather under the Private Pepper’s tent to carry on this tradition of compassion and community.
Recently, the program has expanded to include a tailgate-style event, giving Marines a space to relax, recharge their phones, enjoy a meal, and play games with their peers. Active-duty Marines also join the volunteer team, engaging with the new Marines about their MOS, future plans, and offering guidance and encouragement in ways that only fellow Marines can.
We want every Marine to leave Family Day with more than just memories, we want them to leave knowing they are part of a family that celebrates their service, fosters resilience and connection, and reminds them that they will never stand alone.
